Descent into the Catacombs de Paris! The catacombs are hidden in the Latin Quarter. Both the entrance and the exit are very discreet, small buildings; but it is well worth the effort to find.
The catacombs are a collection of the bones from the overcrowded, unsanitary cemeteries of Paris from 1785. There are over six million skeletons neatly stacked for miles of old quarry passageways down here. It was the most surreal and interesting sight we saw in Paris. It was also a very welcome cool-air experience during a humid heat wave in Europe.
