Xev & Chico

Xev has not been free of her own little mishaps. One morning, at about 3 a.m. (okay, why can't our dogs have their emergencies when we're not sleeping?), Xev was outside and we heard rustling and her chasing after something. Thinking there was a deer outside chewing up our garden once again, Gigi went outside to shoo it away. Turns out, it was a skunk. Gigi got there just in time to see Xev get sprayed as it then started to chase her and Xev into the house.

I have to tell you, skunk stink that fresh and that close is intense! My eyes were watering and I had to fight a gag-reflex. Gigi couldn't even fight her gag reflex and I got the duty of cleaning Xev up. Every time I got my nose near Xev, my head snapped back in reflex to avoid the smell. We got the following recipe from our veterinarian for cleaning the skunk smell:

  • 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

Unfortunately, she got sprayed on her forehead and getting the peroxide that close to her eyes was rough on her. So we resorted to the traditional tomato juice bath—kind of. We didn't have any tomato juice, so that's tomato soup you see in the picture. Don't I look thrilled to be doing this at 3:30 in the morning?
